Case Study

BioSafe Solutions to Cut Environmental Impact of Waste Management

As part of our commitment to use resources efficiently wherever possible, Exact Sciences undertook a detailed evaluation of our third party waste management solutions.

Sustainability considerations were core to vendor assessment. Exact Sciences saw an opportunity to improve energy efficiency, reduce water consumption, reduce waste sent to landfill, improve odor control, and reduce the risk of safety incidents associated with manual lifting of waste material.

BioSafe Solutions was ultimately selected both for the quality of its products and services, and for its ability to deliver positive sustainability impacts. All waste is either recycled or sent to waste-to-energy facilities.

Based on data monitoring to-date, new solutions provided by BioSafe have delivered the following resource savings:

We estimate that cost savings as a result of reduced energy were about $85,000 in the second half of 2019.

Waste management is governed by our Waste Disposal Guidelines. All hazardous and non-hazardous waste not used in energy recovery or recycled is collected and disposed through a licensed waste disposal company.

All chemicals are reviewed to assure we are properly classifying and disposing of waste. Each laboratory is responsible for bringing its hazardous waste to the proper storage location. The Exact Sciences EHS manager is ultimately responsible for the management and disposal of hazardous, non-hazardous, and universal waste.

Exact Sciences provides waste disposal guideline training for all new employees upon initial assignment and when processes change. Hazardous waste management training is completed for all new employees, and annually for all employees.
